Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum was born in the emirate of Dubai in 1943 where he spent the first years of education before his father, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, sent him to study in the United Kingdom.
Upon his return from the United Kingdom, he supported his father Sheikh Rashid in managing the emirate's affairs and the credit was given to him in turning Dubai into a modern city and a commercial hub.
The late Sheikh Maktoum had a role in the formation of the federation. He participated in the early meetings between the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which paved the way to the formal formation of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971. |
| Upon announcing the formation of the federation, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum was appointed the first Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates from 1971 to 1979 and then the Deputy Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. Sheikh Maktoum, who inherited exceptional qualities from his father, was able to well-contribute to the development of the UAE.
After his father, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, passed away in1990, Sheikh Maktoum became the Ruler of Dubai. During the years he ruled the emirate, he saved no efforts pushing Dubai to become internationally recognized as a commercial hub and a tourist destination. Multi-million mega projects were established in the emirate of Dubai attracting investors and creating a myriad of business opportunities.
Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum passed away in 2006 after a life full achievements for his country, the United Arab Emirates, and for the emirate of Dubai. He enjoyed the respect of his people by leaving them well prepared for the future. |
